My skimmate in the Aquamedic varies from dark tea to medium coffee. As noted above, it is not as dark as the stuff I get out of the Aqua C on my 20. It's not see-through unless I turn the flow up full blast. I'm talking 2 cups kitchen-instrument volume here, not 2 full skimmer cups. I don't think I'd WANT that much coming out of my tank at this stage. Again, this is just my experience with the skimmer. I have no doubt that there are better skimmers on the market but not everyone has $500 to blow on a Euroreef skimmer and I believe that the AM can be a decent skimmer if it's paired with good maintenance habits. Then again, I also believe a LOT of problems in tanks are due to infrequent water/sock changes and generally lax or inconsistent use of additives. I try to do at least a 10% water change every week. I change my filter socks at least once, and usually twice, a week. etc. So maybe my skimmer doesn't have to work as hard as others =)
As for cyano, my issues with it come and go. I didn't have any for the longest time even during break-in when is which it usually hits. Then it came back. Then it went away. Then it came back. I think it had more to do with an overdue change on our RO/DI unit and halides at the end of their lifespan than the skimmer. I also took the UV unit off to (soon) replace it with a larger unit, so that could be part of it, too.
