i purchase a used tank(220 gal) 2 months ago with a euroreef skimmer and the model is,i think it's a cs 8-3 or a s 8-2,the guy said it's rated for 180 gallons and it is with a sedra pump but i dont know what model cause the label has worn off,the problem is the skimmer is not settling with it's bubbles,it would skim with thick foam then it will be gone again with just small amount of bubbles with mostly water,i tried to clean the pump and when i took off the impeller MAGNET there was a smoke coming inside of the hoUsing,so i check the magnet it seem fine (no burn marks or what so ever) so what i did after cleaning the skimmer and pump i went to home wnepot and got some plumbing parts,i put a tee barace on the outgoing tube then a ricer pipe on top and elbow and a short pipe going down., so went and set it up again and it was skimming with thick foam again for a couple of days then yesterday it was back to normal, what should i need to do?i was planning on getting a new pump like the ehiem 1260,but how would i fit it with the er's elbow?is anybody using this pump on thier er,pls let me get some inputs, and bye the way the guy told me that the sump is around 70 to 80 gallons,i have not measure it to get the exact size, and i have 1 powder brown,1 kole,1 damsel,1 clown, there is not much with 300 pounds live rock, the tank is fish only set-up for now..

I have a eheim 1262 for my ER RS250, which is a bit larger than the one you have I believe. EuroReef sent me an adapter to get it to work.

In any case, it just sounds like yours needs to be adjusted a bit. I'm not sure what you mean by "settling with it's bubbles," but I've got to fiddle with the output valve (I added a gate valve) from time to time to get the foam column in the right place. Can you post any pictures of the skimmer in action?

Does this pump that you are currently using have a venturi valve and when you say smoking in the pump itself did you check the bottom of the impeller on the pump I had a impeller in my eheim 1262 pump on my ER get something stuck underneath the impeller and scratched the crap out of where the impeller sits and the thing would not work properly I finally got a new impeller and sanded down the rough sopotrs where the impeller sit and it has been working good as new. Also try to call ER they have good customer service t least that is my experience. HTH

I think you need to rise the water level in the sump, second, the water outlet has too many pvc elbows, one is enough and the third would be playing with the riser pipe.
That would be assuming the impeller is in good shape.
If you are not getting enough air, check the impeller not to be swollen if it is a new one will fix the issue

i am trying to play with it right now,i took out the tee elbow and i left it like the way i got it with no ricer pipe just the tube with the foam(assuming the guy i bought from with the tank used it like this and working properly),the next issue i noticed is everytime i plug-in the er i'ts not making bubbles right away,i need to grab the air hose and blow air on too it then it start to work,so i think the pump is not getting much air that creates the bubbles,so what do you think,do i need to get just the impeller replace or get a new sedra pump probably the 9000 and modify he needle into a screen, thanks and pls keep the tips coming

one more thing,i have a mixed saltwater that's been sitting for 4 days now,can i use that to fill up the sump to add more water, thanks

you do not need more saltwater to compensate for the evaporation you need RODI water, you would only be increasing the salinity little by little if you add sw most or all the time, a bad thing.
You use the mixed sw to do a water change.

if you need to blow in the plastic hose I suggest taking the pump apart and check the impeller, most likely you will need a new one if you notice even a little warping it shoud be a perfect cylinder shape.

The riser pipe is to be there, I suggest placing it back and lower/rise it until you see the bubbles going up the collection cup

thanks marion but i dont have a ro system, would the distilled or safeway vending machine water do the trick? i thought the rodi water is a must for reef system only not fish only, sorry i'm still learning..

i am currently done playing with the er and i am getting progress,i put a pipe in between of the outlet foam and the skimmer pipe and its doing the trick lol,the problem with the riser pipe i made is it's not going through the middle of the tee elbow like the one in the pic,i need to go back to home depot and buy the right size that will go through the middle, and the as far as the skimmer pump would the sedra 9000 ok,do u use this? or stick with the 5000?i have a bad feeling on this pump i currenly have it's draws heat than my other pumps,thanks..

here's the link to the ricer pic,i's not mine,http://cgi.ebay.com/Euroreef-CS12-1...ryZ46313QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

many people use distilled water and some others do get it from vending machines in the absence of rodi, just run a quick check with a test kit to be on the safe-r side.
Whatever comes in regular or filtered water, like minerals, chlorine and other things will stay in the aquarium, little by little they will accumulate since water is the only thing that will evaporate.
I'm still learning too.

Do you have the 8-2 or the 8-3? The 8-2 should be 24" tall and the 8-3 is 30". On the 8-3, the original pump is a 5000 and is very underpowered. If you want to use the larger 9000 pump as a replacement you will have to set the skimmer body on a raised platform (1-2") to allow for the difference in height between the two pumps. I went through this with my 8-3 before finally modding the skimmer to be a recirc.
