Top off daily will prevent large swings in salinity. An auto top off is nice, but doing it manually only takes a few minutes a day. It's one of the facts of maintaining a tank.
I must say that I enjoy topping off only once a week, though. I went back to college FULL time this past January and I have 3 kids, a hubby and I work. The $80 I invested in my JBJ auto top off from Bulk Reef was well worth it in my case.
To the OP: I really like my jbj ato. You could get by with one from auto top off.com and they might be cheaper. I have a 10g tank as my R/O reservoir. This is on my 40b with a 20 long sump.
I'm not real sure what you are saying exactly here, but I wouldn't rely on top off to keep the water fresh since anything in the water gets left behind. Water changes are still a must no matter how much water you are topping off with.
I want to reiterate this as well. When water evaporates it LEAVES BEHIND contaminants. When you top off it just dilutes them a little bit. Fish poop doesn't evaporate, nitrates don't evaporate, just like salt doesn't evaporate.
Agree with disc1 on no logic behind having more top off. It does nothing for the system really but requires more RO/DI water so your better off with less evaporation.
The amount of water that's evaporating is rather high consider it is only 20 gallons. Answering the following questions will really help on this thread:
- What is the ambient temperature of the room?
- What is the temp of the tank?
- What type of lighting? How high off the water?
- Is the top sealed off or is it open lid?
- Do you have fans running across the surface of water in tank or sump?
my 180G with glass tops and 90 LED Lighting with 40G open top sump looses about a gallon a day.
Also note I have two brutes with about 70 gallons of water (total) in them most of the time that loose some into the air also so the total humidity in my air is split between evap from the 180G the sump and the two brutes.
put some glass canopys that will slow it down a bit...run your lights about an hour less during the summer months if you can afford to that will help also
