everything is going wrong

ok do i need to check other things in my tank like calcium. right know all i check for is amiona ph nitrate nd nitrite is that ok

If its a fish only I wouldnt worry about much more than what your checking now except maybe PH. Regular water changes will take care of the rest.

You could try a copper test although that may not be sensative enough if your copper levels are low. There are also copper pads you could use if its detected.

and the snail shells i should take out. when i go to buy more snails what kind is a good kind and what about hermits what kind is a good kind and how many should i get.

Leave the shells in the tank. They don't hurt anything and as your new hermits grow they can use them for homes.

You can do a lookup about snails on www.liveaquaria.com to see what you might be interested in. Most popular ones I hear about are Turbo Astrea, Turbo Mexican, Cerith, Nerite, Nassarius, and Margarita. You can also check out there cleaner packs just to see what the recommended number of each species is for your tank size.

If you are on well water (I am too) you should definitely look at getting an RO/DI unit to make your freshwater top off and to mix your new saltwater with for water changes. The water quality will make all the difference in the world.

Do you have copper pipes? As graveyardworm stated earlier, the smallest amounts of copper in the tank are devastating to snails and crabs and a lot of other invertabates.

No harmful chemicals for humans, I am sure. Fish and other reef critters, I must say, are completely different. There is a chance that what happened to your tank can be attributed in part to using tap water, especially considering the pH of well water is usually on the low side.

Considering the price of a bucket of RO water every two weeks or so and the price of some of the livestock you intend to be keeping... I see no good reason to continue using well water.

I've got a 12 gallon nano that I've had for about 10 mos now and it's not all that hard. I honestly only do a nice water change every other week and everything seems to be fine. It's a nano reef with a cleaner shrimp, a perc clown and a few cleaners...
Are you getting green algae in there (not sure if you're leaving your lights on since there's only rock)? If not, don't put any snails yet. I've got a mexican turbo and a couple of other small types (I swear, there are more in there than I ever put...) and a couple of blue and red leg crabs. Everyone seems to get along fine and there's plenty of room. I'm planning on upgrading to a larger tank not because of the ease of a larger tank, but because it's become a real hobby for me and I want to be able to have more types of coral and fish.
One piece of advice for your fish that was given to me: I only get tank raised (I feel it's more humane - and I'm told they do better.) I had a small NON tank raised tomato clown when I first started and he didn't do well (and which I now know isn't a good choice for a small tank). I have a tank raised percula clown that I've had for almost the life of my tank and he does amazing. He's hosting in a leather coral (it's so cool to watch) and he does great. So I'd say add a tank raised perc clown if you want a couple of clowns. Mine was only about 12 or 13 bucks and he's beautiful. Best of luck to you. The advice on adding SLOW is a good one.

i would def. recommend the rodi water. was the live rock live when you bought it. or was it base rock. i let mine mix for 72 hours.i have found it better to do 5% weekly rather than 10% bi weekly. its worth getting the right containers and etc. to make it as easy as possible. the damsel may be hard to catch though with the live rock in it.
