Twice in the last 3 or 4 years I have carried live coral as a carry-on item. The first time from Rochester, NY to Indianapolis, IN and the second from Rochester, NY to Dallas, TX. Both times the weekend after Thanksgiving. Both times I included a fish to use the fish exception. The four stripe damsel survived the first trip. The second trip a chromis died shortly after arrival home. No issues with TSA either time, but the airport wasn't busy. I asked for a hand inspection rather than xray.
I'm considering doing this again in mid July on a different domestic flight, but would prefer to stop risking the lives of fish. I'll ask TSA in advance, but plan to try it either way. For zoas and SPS I can use the paper towel method as a backup. I'm not sure what to do with LPS if I get any torches. I'll also try to throw in some large pods as "live animals", but with a large frag container this could be harder.

Yes I could check it, ship it, etc, but I'd prefer to keep it nearby.
