Experiences with Tunze DOC 9021?

Hi,

Just bought this unit and it really doesn´t produce any skim at all (just some drops per day) after 6 days in service. I reassembled the unit a couple of times looking for something but can´t find anything ( i read the instructions in German, english and spanish couldn't find nothing there ) . Water level is about 7 inches in the sump and the Aquarium is about 280 gal. The bottom plate is placed and the special fitting for the intake of the pump. I also noticed some water flowing out of a hole in the back of the unit where the magnet holders are placed , there are two holes there, one in each unit. Should this be so?

Would be great to get some help here, I think I just spend US $ 600 for the trash.

Does water exit the stand pipe on each side? If not, there is something assembled wrong and it will not skim in this condition.

Everything else you describe is normal.

Thank you for the reply. There is water flowing out of the front on both pipes. My worries are that there is almost no skim production. I just set up a Aquamedic 3000 with a HY 5000 and it is producing a good amount of skim every day . I took the unit out but I can´t believe that the unit won´t work. I want to reinstall the unit. How big is the influence of turbulences in the skimmer as he is just a couple of inches away from the drain pipe.
Is there a recommendation about how distant the unit has to be from the drain pipe? How "calm" has to water to be? This is the only reason I can think of.

The turbulence would have to be a lot, does the skimmer make any strange noises? Gurgling, grinding etc? My guess would be the airlines are pinched or the air flow was not open enough or something is wrong with the venturis. To get an accurate test you would need to have no other skimmers running. Generally with multiple skimmers only one really works, it is either the first one in the circuit or the strongest one and the difference in strength can be very small.
