Experimenting with my new G9

I just got my new Cannon Powershot G9 last night.
I am planning on using it to take pictures when I go scuba diving in Florida next week
and when I am at Monterey the week after that.

So I need to figure this thing out, and fast!

Here are a couple of test shots I took of my tanks.
I played around a little with the white balance, manual settings,
shooting video and even processing of RAW images.

So far I am very impressed with the capabilities of this camera.

Although I still have a lot to learn.
Any constructive criticism is greatly welcome.

At this point I am kinda hitting a wall. I am experimenting with flash levels
(3 adjustable levels in the camera and a pair of external strobes for underwater shooting)

Provided I can even get a working understanding of what combinations
of flash to use at various distances, how can I go about adjusting my camera
settings to keep from slightly over or under exposing my pictures?

The first picture is wildly overexposed.
The second picture looks like it is getting too much glare.
The dark areas are too dark and the bright spots are too bright.

How do I go about adjusting the camera settings to even out my pictures?

It's been a while since I had my G6 but you should be able to dial in exposure compensation to dial up or down the exposure.

Also, shooting RAW can help should you need to make adjustments to either exposure or WB after the fact.

I have a G6 in addition to my DSLRs and it takes great pics. I'd recommend you to take RAW as suggested already and try to play around with Av mode, which is the aperture priority mode. I would assume that if my G6 takes great pics then the G9 can't be worst. Here are some pics take in the mode i suggested.
