Explain sps growth

I bought a rainbow milli from a LFS. It was just a two branch frag. You can see it had encrusted a little in the first picture under my 6 t5 retro kit.

It continued to encrust and shoot out branches around the edge of the plug, but nothing off of the original two branches. First picture is still under t5, second picture is in a holding tank under 2 LED fixtures I had switched to. I was in the process of upgrading to a 150g.

I started having issues in the holding tanks and started losing some of my sps, so I cut the original two branches and had a friend hold the rest of the coral in his tank. White line shows where I cut the original two branches.

I ended up losing the two branches I fragged, but my friend was able to keep the rest of the coral alive in his tank. I now have it in my 150g under an ATI dimmable Sunpower. I continue to get excellent growth, but absolutely no growth at all from where I fragged the original two branches. Can somebody explain to me why am I not getting any growth here. The middle of this colony is pretty bare compared to the rest. And I have fragged in several more times on the outer branches and new growth has always occurred on these.

I have a sunset mille like that and the growth pattern always has the outside branches growing with the center staying the same. This essentially results in a table shape given time. I think it's just the nature of it.

Beautiful piece BTW!! :)

My pink lemonade is the same way. The original branch encrusted on the rocks and new branches grow out of the encrusting. Strange.
