exploding 9v in temp controller

I went to change the jumper setting in my 7028/2 yesterday and noticed the 9v battery was bulging at the posts. I pulled it off and the positive post came off the battery and stuck to the controllers connector. I pried it off with pliers and plugged in a new battery while changing the jumper.

Today I though my worst nightmare was coming true! I heard some cracks/pops like the sound of my 125g getting ready to burst onto the floor. I unplugged everyting and checked all glass for cracks while I heard a few more pops. Pulled the 7028 off its velcro mounts and saw grey ooze coming out of the battery compartment. Opening the compartment showed an exploded 9v, which I removed and did my best of cleaning the compartment.

The controller is back in action and seems to be doing fine, but Im afraid to install another battery. Do I try another battery? I know the controller is still under warranty, but as I couldnt find my reciept from Aquatek it does me no good. Really just wondering if this has been seen before. Hehe sorry if it took me forever to ask my question, but needless to say Im a little excited from that horrid sound of exploding battery that replicated cracking glass:)
Thanks in advance

I have thoroughly researched this, 7028/2 indeed uses a AA battery, I have this model at home. 7028/3 should use no battery, it uses a battery only if it is not being used with a switched outlet, the switched outlet powers the unit, so if you used a battery essentially it was being charged and this is what would have caused the battery to blow up. Page 45 of the manual explains that no battery should be used when the unit is being used as a controller otherwise the battery may leak.
