ext or int overflows on 10x4x30in?

cool,i would love for my tank to make some noise like that also!

so how big is the opening that you have instead of teeth?

There are several 1" x 4" openings that run along the back wall of the tank. The overflow is then attached to the outside of the tank along the openings.
Gutter Gaurd works great because it comes in 4" x various legth rolls so I can just cut of so many inches and roll it into a tube and jam it in the openings.

Hey triggerfish1976, any pics of your openings along the back wall of your tank showing it going into the overflow? I'm planning a new tank and was considering just that option instead of using the traditional teeth on the overflow.

I like the idea of an external overflow, and in your application 1/2" is way more than enough. If your overflow is 40"x8"x8" the actual water in the overflow is really only going to be about 39"x7.5"x6" (figuring the overflow will not be filled all the way up) that's only 7.6 Gal that's only about 68 lb. As for flow you can go with longer teeth to achieve the flow rate you want. External is the way to go. Good luck. On a side note who did you get quotes form? If you don't want to answer here, please IM me.

Thanks

FYI, I think when I did my calculations on my tank, I ended up with 8 inches of material on each side around the holes on my tank.

you arn't planing on putting the overflow on the end and using waveboxes are you? that would cause lots of problems and noise with your drains. the overflow needs to be on the back, and better to be near the center if you plan on using waveboxes

a local fish store of mine has a peninsulas style tank and use two waveboxes on them also and have no problem with these issues. so i'll think i'll be fine.

If you have the overflow box teeths cut 1" lower than standard 1.5" and raise your water level up a bit, you should be fine.

yeah, i plan on leaving 2in from the top of the tank to the water surface. then the teeth will will be 2 in lower from the top and will be 2in long also. so hopefully should be ok.
