external pumps

Are there any of the external return pumps, that don't cool themselves with the tank water? I am sick to death of this mag7 constantly getting the impeller assembly coated with calcium, and freezing up. It is a once a month issue with this pump, and sometimes more often then that. The screw holes are wearing out taking it apart so much to clean the impeller. The impeller it's self doesn't get any build up, it's the magnet inside the pump where all of the heat is that gets caked up.

look into the gen-x 30. I originally bought 1 of them and two of the gen-x 40's. Ended up trading the two larger ones for two more 30's. I love them, I think I found them for like 70 bucks. Not bad for an external pump rated up to 1100 gph

Does anyone use little giant pumps? I have been looking around at different pumps, and can't decide if the Iwaki or blue line is worth the extra cost. I have spent a small fortune trying to save a buck on pumps that have turned out to be worthless. I am looking for dependability and cool running not price this time. My mag7 that i am using now freezes up often, and also heats the tank about 5*. I have always liked the Mag pumps as submersible, but as an inline, it's not been all that great.

i have a extra gen x pump for sale if anyone wants it. its rated at 900 or 950 gph ( i think, i will have to check). i bought it and never used it, decided to go with a internal. used it to pump my tank out while doing a leak check thats all so its pretty much brand new.

I have Gen-x as well. I think it may be made by Iwaski or it is a 100% knock off. Anyway, ask Jeremy at Premier Aquatics or a tech at Marine Depot.

I looked at the Gen-x pumps, but the outlets look real thin and cheap. There also seems to be lots of complaints about the angle of the output nozzle being weird. I have been through 3 return pumps this year, so i didn't want to get yet another one that i wish i hadn't been trying to save a buck on lol. That was why i was asking here about what kind of pumps are best.. I know price isn't always a good measure of quality. Is the nozzle angle not a problem, and has anyone had problems with the thin housings?

jpitts101, What model is the one you have, and are you willing to ship?

its a GEN X PCX-30
max capacity 982.7 gph.
max head is 15.7

im sure if you want it we can work something out.

the genx 30 does have an angled output nozzel, in stead of 90 degres, kinda like 80 or so. But i promise it is not had to remedy. Cut a piece of 2x4 at an angle kinda like a door stop. And mount the pump to that. Then you have your up and down angle.

I mean, you could go with a little giant or Blueline. I have had both of those. and I still have a blueline for my closed loop. But really it isnt worth the price. At the price of the genx you could replace the whole pump for the price of an impellor for a little giant. They are proud of their pumps.

I agree with Lazyreefer on this, i think the genx are just like the iwaki's. Doug was at my house today picking up some Zoas's, did you think they were loud lazyreefer?

Have a look at the pumps marketed by PanWorld. I'm using the 50PX-X. It's super quiet, runs quite cool (internal fan) and has a 1" threaded connections that are square with the pump...no odd angles to try to plumb. I use mine on a closed loop system and haven't had to throttle the flow. It's been running continuously since May and hasn't even hinted at a problem. We're getting ready to set up another tank and you can bet we'll be using another PanWorld on its closed loop, too.

I don't even worry about the noise actually lol. With my chiller and computer and hood fans and so on lol it will blend right in. My tank is 3 feet from my head while i sleep. I wouldn't be able to sleep without all the noise. I know if a pump freezes while i'm sleeping, i am up before the syphon breaks on the return line lol. This mag7 has had my up cleaning the impeller at 4am more then once lol.

jpitts101, PM me a price and how you would want the money (paypal, M/O, or whatever ya need). The zip to figure the shipping is 32757. I would just pick it up in March while i'm there, but that is really what this is for. I don't want to leave my tank depending on my current pump and my wife while i'm gone. She can handle the daily care, but a major equipment failure would be messy. Her keeping up with limewater topoff has me nervous enough without a pump freezing up lol.

Thanks J.P. , I got my pump in today and everything hooked up and is working great. Can barely even hear it running, and my chiller hasn't had to kick on at all since a i hooked it up. It does move a lot more water then the mag7 did, but that was easily fixed with the gate valve.
