External return pump??

This may be a silly question.... I bought a new skimmer today at CRA and I do not have room for it in my sump unless I can move the return MAG pump to the outside of the sump. Is this possible/feasible?

It is possible though if you have the means an external pump may be worth the extra cash. I used a mag 5 once to suck water up from a 55 gallon display to a 40 breeder refugium/sump for about a year for my mandarin and it worked pretty well. I actually still have the mag 5 as my current return pump on my 120. Mag pumps are pretty hardy-

Mine is outside just place a folded towel or somthing under it to alleviate the weight hangin on the plumbing and also help deaden the sound. Also helps remove heat from the tank when you put it outside. I run a mag 7.5 on mine.

BTW. If you are using PVC make sure you put a union before and after the pump. I also put in a ball valve before each union.

Yes but...

I used to have a Mag 12 outside my sump but replaced it after reading the instructions. The mfg recomends in water only. I guess the reason is HEAT!

I would recomend an external pump with a heat shutoff.

I used to have a Mag 7 external and it worked ok, but started leaking for some reason, have just bought a Eheim to use external.
