External Wavebox

Has anyone ever rigged an external wavebox on any size tank, but specifically, on a larger tank?

I'm thinking it would be possible to plumb an external box to the side of a tank and using a Tunze on a controller, simply recreate a Tunze-style wavebox externally. The flow would be through a short length of pipe connecting the aquarium and wavebox (bulkheads in each).

The biggest down-side I can think of is if the wavebox fails, the aquarium would drain quickly down to the bulkhead (a pretty big down side).

Thoughts? Experience?

This has been done successfully by a guy in Europe. I plan to do it on my big tank when(and if) I get it going.
