what's the best way to get the transfer tanks started? If I'm adding fresh saltwater each transfer, wont that be hard on the fish?

Also, for the QT that they will stay in after the tank transfers, what is the best method to get the cycled?

Can ich transfer through water? or do they only transfer from an actual object?

As long as you mix the new saltwater for 24 hours in advance it shouldnt be hard on the fish. Oxygen and pH should be well adjusted by then.

Best way to get the QT cycled is by using a bacteria in a bottle product like seachem stability. Is near instant for a reasonably stocked tank. Have a sponge filter in the tank so the bacteria can have a well aerated place to start multiplying.

Ich will transfer in water during the theront and protomont stages. Objects tend to transfer the tomont/tomite stages since the parasite has encysted on it.

absolutely. that is what i use on my temporary QT's. it is a little easier to maintain a HOB in the long run though since you can just pull out the filters and replace them; whereas with a sponge filter you need to occasionally (every month or two) pull it out and squeeze out some of the gunk.

For preventing ich, yes. By far the easiest and most reliable method. I do it on all new fish.

Thanks. A couple other questions.

1. Can I use 2 5 gallon buckets for the tank transfer? I will set up a QT to put them in after. The fish I have are a small hippo tang, 5 chromis, a 6 line wrasse and bangaii cardinal.

2. For the QT, should it always run with prazi? Or do I not need it after the tank transfer?

3. Does the salinity in the buckets and QT just have to match the display tank?

5g buckets are ok, but not for all those fish at once. Prazi is always smart to use; you can use it during TTM or after in the QT.

Match salinity and temp, and try to match alkalinity as much as possible.
