It's not gonna break when you pick it up, tube is inherently very strong when forces are evenly applied (such as being filled with water). My primary reason for recommending 1/4" wall to DIYers is that 1/4" wall has 2X the gluing area and thus will be more forgiving.
BTW, whoever is charging double for 1/4" wall is, well, I wouldn't deal with them.
