eye candy aside, what is your favorite fish when judged solely on personality?

Niger triger,, one cool fish, dances hovers like a hellicopte,r fast as hell when he wants to, sleeps wedged in a rock and puts up with my Scopas tang tail flaps. I think he likes it. he is more like a dog than a fish.

My Scopas Tang did the same thing to my Niger Trigger and my Niger Trigger did the same thing yours did. He was a good fish, until I added 5 blue/green chromis. Now this Trigger had never bothered an invert, coral or another fish but it must have been some kind of instict trigger thing that when he saw those little fish scurrying around he went after them like a mako. He instantly chewed through one of the little guys bellies and I had to remove him and sell him to my LFS. Sad day as I really really liked that guy.

Well, I have owned my fair share of fish both reef safe and not. My dogface puffer has to have the best personality of any fish I have yet to own. He is a very expressive fish whom you often feel like he is trying to communicate with you by how he looks at you. A very smart fish and has a suprisingly gentle demeanor. He is the bigest fish in the tank, and when any other smaller fish give him an occassional shove he does not retaliate and just shrugs them off literally by raising his head with a look on his face where you feel like he is thinking, "take it easy". He knows me as opposed to other people and reacts differently when I approach the tank as opposed to someone else. He will watch you as much as you watch him. Without any training, whenever I motion with my finger to come up to the front glass he leaves the rock work to greet me at the front glass. It is amazing because sometimes I approach the glass, and he remains laying down on a rock staring at me. I then motion with my finger, and he gets up off the rock and swims up to the front glass. Every night he watches me open the freezer to make food and shows excitement knowing that he will be fed soon when I do so. All have to do is hold up the white plastic spoon I use to feed, and he goes absolutely nuts. When he gets real hungry, he will swim with his face pressed up on the front glass and grind his teeth staring at me waiting to be fed. He will move on the front glass to the postion closest to where I am standing or siting at the time engaging in this behavior.

My porcupine puffer is hands down the best fish rated on personality and friendiness. He lets me pet him, I can play with him (chases my finger around the glass) and he is always paying attention to what I am doing in the house.

I agree with the Chad. My porcupine has the most personality of any fish that I have owned. He follows me back and forth like a puppy. Also I think that lawnmower blennies are great fish too watch as well. Quirky personalities.

Definately puffer when I had a FO. Just like a little dog. Now it's my flame hawk. He watches every move I make.

my sailfin tang and my blenny, the sailfin is beautifull and eats out of my hand, my blenny also eats nori out of my hand, i will cup my hand with nori in it and he will swim into my hand and set there and eat on the nori

I think it is amazing how most of the people in this thread all have a common experience with the same species fish. From what I've heard so far in this thread it would go Puffer, then seemingly a tie for 2nd in between a trigger and hawkfish. Then it would seem that the gobies and blennies and dragonet type fish are 3rd followed by tangs. I don't find this coincidental either as I think these types of fish IME are also the most interactive. I haven't had a puffer as I have a reef tank, but I think they would be an awesome fish to own. I really wish now that I hadn't sold my 90g FW tank. It would have made a great FOWLR tank. Oh well maybe one day when I upgrade my 125 I'll turn it into a FOWLR, but I had already planned on it to be a frag tank!!! I hate this hobby like I hate my girlfriend sometimes; can't live with her and can't live without her!

Another vote for the flame hawk. Never owned one, but worked in a fish store for 5 years, and the hawks were always fun. #1 on my list.

#2 porcupine puffer. Cute blue sparkly eyes and beaky smile always woos women. Other puffers are great too, dogfaces in particular, but the porcupine's face has more personality to it (imho). Hmm... actually the fact that women like them should make it #1.

#3 (my personal fave) are blennies. Bi-colour for me, but all are good. Lots of character for a fish.

i do love my triggers, especially since they are settled in... always, and i mean always begging for food, lol... and my magenta dottyback is quite an actively curious and aware fish, and definatly no pushover... fiesty little guy for sure :)

I would have to say my fav fish is my McCosker's Flasher wrasse followed by my starry blenny.
The wrasse just has sooo much personality, it dives and darts around the tank and just makes it look more fun in there.
The blenny is just funny to watch and is the only fish to attach me when I put my hand in there.

I have not owned either but the oens at the fish store are definatley the blue spotted jawfish and the puffers.

my grouper i miss him. he used to pace as soon as i walked in the room. flashing colors almost sticking his head out of the water.
if any one sat with thier back to the tank he would hover directly behind them until they peeked back. then he would dart in a rock. and repeat.
i used to think he played hide and seek.

fuzzy dwarf lionfish, underwater dogs
Yes and yes. I still have plans to set up a tank down the road where I can keep one of these guys again. I had one in a 20L and it was like he greeted me every time I came home. He was a VERY cool fish. he's now entertaining someone else since I had to break down the tank.

My fav I have currently is my YWG. I'd have to say he's my #2 favorite that I've owned. My old LFS had a porcupine puffer as a store pet that is an awesome fish too.

Definitely hawkfish. Sometimes when they look at me they make me feel like I'm the one in a glass box!

I totally agree! It's the way they move their head back and forth as if they had a neck, and the way they are always cocking one eye the other direction to check everything out constantly. I have to say my hawkfish is always the first to come haulin tail (literally) out of the rockwork to greet me at the water line, and the first to peck at my hand when there is food in it. If I put food in my hand and cup it he will swim up into my hand, stop, perch and peck at whatever I have.
