fading color on zoanthids

I have tried my second time with RPE. My first try they started to multiply, and then they would loose their color and look almost iridescent. I am now trying my second batch and they are doing the same thing. When initially purchased, they were a nice red color. Now they look washed out...almost a clear color. Any ideas as to why???? They are opening up all the way.

I have Metal Halides on the tank.

PH 8.2
Nitrite 0
Amonia 0
Nitrate 40

Everything I have tested is normal.. All other coral in the tank are doing good and are keeping thier color. Just have a problem with the RPE

i have a hard time with xenia.. hard to say exactly why your tank cant keep a specific type of coral...

possibly your nitrates at 40ppm thats just insane you have anything else in the tank? fish or anything?

The nitrates usually run around 40 or 20. I have about 11 fish....in a 55 gallon. Also, a large amount of live rock. I have tried to lower the nitrate level but cant seem to get it to go down. I have done water changes with RO water, and that doesnt seem to help. Also, I cut back feedings to one time a day...and sometimes skip a day.

I am unable to keep any hard corals and lately leathers in the tank. My leather I have had for about a year recently died and I replaced it and about a week later it was on its way out.

Any suggestions would be great. I have been into saltwater for about 2 years now....and I know I have a great deal to learn. Any advice would be great.

1 yellow tang, 3 clown, 1 royal gramma, 2 blue damsels, 1 firefish, 2 gumdrop gobies, 1 sand goby.

Most everything in the tank is doing great. Just when I introduce the RPE that they lose their color. I am wanting to get some PPE, but if i am having such a hard time with RPE...I dont know if I should.

More info on light then just "MH".

Maybe its fading in color because your setup is 175watt 6.5k MH in a 24+" tall tank bb and zoa are all the way at the bottom.

maybe its 400watt 20k and the zoa are top of the tank right under the light and it might be beaching.

My RPE's would lose color under MH's also...put them under my T5's and now color is amazing.

Do you have a pic of your RPE's? Here is a pic of mine.
I just recently boought them, and this is the color they came in as. Is this coloring good?
Sorry about my photo as it is a bit washed out, but the color is pretty much on with the actual ones. They are under T-5 lighting.

I saw a macro shot of RPE's and they were defiitely more redd than this. Enhanced maybe? But mine are supposed to be True RPE's from a reputable seller.
