Fastest Grower I have ever had

I got this frag from this one guy a few months ago of an encrusing green gorgonian and it has been growing everyday since. The day after I got it in my tank the polyps were already moving onto the rock in my tank. The stuff looks similar to GSP but the polyps are longer and feathery and it exhibits feeding response to just about anything (including larger peices of fomula 1). Now it it moing close to my montipora, does anyone think this will be a problem? A gorgonian shouldn't have enough stinging power to kill the monti, right? Here are some pics, the first was right when I got the frag and the second is two months later.

I promise you that it is not, I know GSP, hell I have GSP, I knew this was going to happen it always does with this coral

Its likely a species of Briareum, which does include both GSP (formerly Pachyclavularia) and encrusting gorgonians. So.. youre both right.

It does not sting; it will however simply overgrow your Montipora if it is allowed to contact it. Also keep in mind that many members of this group (including, and especially GSP) produce some of the most noxious chemical cocktails of all soft corals, so I strongly suggest you keep it away from anything you dont want to get overrun.

Toxic Soup

Toxic Soup

As previusly stated, make sure that it doesnt come in contact with your other corals as it definatly can emit some nasty toxins. I had a small toadstool fall on my GSP the other night, my snails kicked it over. I righted it by morning but the part that was in contact with the GSP had 'burn marks' on it, and still hasnt extended its polyps sence the fall onto the gsp (about a week ago).

I have seen what is commonly referred to as GSP and encrusting gorgonians side-by-side, and they do look different. Apart, they're difficult to distinguish sometimes...at least for me! :)

Both do produce toxic chemicals, as previously mentioned. You should trim it back and send the frag to me for safe-keeping....;)

wow, I have nuclear green palys next to some GSP, and noticed a "burn " mark on one polyp. Of course I didn't realize the GSP would cause that until now. Gone to move the nuke greens......
