Favia dying, fungus growing on it.

I thought everything was going good in my tank. All readings at 0, pH is 8.4 and calcium around 500.

I came home and found my favorite favia that was a little frag that grew at a good pace, with a patch of fungus growing on it.

The rock is fairly large so getting it out could be a problem.

Any suggestions on what could be going on?

tough to see by the pic, but it looks like a sponge. Have you tried just pulling of the "fungus". Could you get a ppic from the other angle so we can see the "fungus" better? It may also be brown jelly. Hard to tell by the pic. either way you need to act fast. You can pm me if you like, as I may not follow this thread, but i'm always around here. curious to see your findings.

Actually it looks more like another LPS attacked it. Anything within range, especially acans, torches, etc?

When my acan attacks my brain (which it's done numerous times becuase it gets too close):

Now that you mention it!!!!! There is an Acan frag just above it:

I will move the Acan. Any chance this will heal up?

And it's hard to tell, but it looks like an acan echinata, the little LPS sniper with one heck of a reach ;) That's what the orange crush next to the brain is as well.

Move one or the other. Personally I give the coral a few hours to "heal" then VERRRYYYYYY gently suck off the dead tissue so it doesn't float and irritate something else. You'll be surprised possibly as to how much of the tissue recovers (hopeful). Mine 10 days later (tag was in the bottom left corner where you see just SLIGHT discoloration now)

I can't say personally I've seen that, but many LPS has stinging capabilities (especially with the sweepers). Some are more aggressive than others.

The weird thing is that this frag has been in the tank for quite some time now and did not bother anything around it.

I guess I also know what happeded to the pink cup monti that I had in the vicinity of the frag.

There has been a recent change in my flow paterns in the tank.

Maybe this is what set it off.

Thanks Matt

That's exactly what happened. Echinatas in particular are nasty when it comes to that. My most aggressive is my hillae, but the echinata's aren't far behind. Hopefully it'll recover....that's a beautiful favites.
