Favia Scab

Hi Everybody: :wavehand:

I've been cruising around reading a lot of great advice from you folks over the years. I finally decided to create a profile so I could ask some specific questions.

I've had this piece of Favia for about a month or so and thought it was doing well. About 3-4 days ago, I noticed what I thought was a shell on one of the eyes. I figured it was a discarded hermit shell that was rubbing against the top eye, so I went to flick it off. It was not a shell at all. It was like a crust and it just disintegrated when I touched it. You can see the area around the eye looks like it's starting to lose color. Today, I noticed that I have that similar looking crust on one of the other eyes...now towards the bottom. My LFS has never seen this, so I'm hoping someone here can help me out???

I think you've got some little critter in there munching on it when you're not looking. I've got something similar going on with an acan colony, where something is attacking it from underneath and leaving little white crusty piles.

Yup! Sure did. I checked it first thing this morning and the crust had "grown". I took the favia piece out and looked underneath and sure enough, there it was. I'm not sure exactly what it was to be honest, but it extended from the eye all the way to the "cocoon" underneath. I was able to pick it all off, so I hope that'll end this sad chapter. Yet, another lesson learned.

I had to hurry to work otherwise I would have taken pics to share/warn others.
