Favorite blenny?

OK, I think that I am giving up on a sixline wrasse for a planned 38 gal reef tank (other fish planned - ocellaris clown, royal gramma).

Based on some threads I've read, I'm thinking about a blenny for the 3rd and final fish. I've heard lots of things about starry blennies, and some about Midas blennies as well. So, I figure that I'd ask peole what their favorite blenny is and why.

Tank environment - live rock, 2" shalow sand bed with medium to fine sediment, mix of coral types (shrooms, softies, LPS, possibly a SPS but I doubt it).

Tailspots are cool, and it probably wont have aggression issues in a smaller tannk like my favorite the Starry. There is also a Midas if you want something with movement, but it's not your standard herbivore blenny.

IMO, I don't really see any issues with adding another fish after a blenny either.

Starry Blennies get a little big for a 38 and IMO so will a Midas. The suggested Tailspot Blenny is a VERY good choice. Like most blennies they have lots of personality, are very "cute" as my wife would say and are a perfect size for your tank.

I had a Midas blenny in my previous 29g tank and he was one of my favorite fish. He had great character - would come up to the glass and swim around excitedly whenever someone would walk by and look in. He was like the "dog" of the aquarium. Not to mention, he was a beautiful fish... sunset coloring and bright blue eyes.

i have a Smith's Blenny in my 20L and i love him. always very active, constantly picking at the rockwork, loves flake and mysis too!

and that's how it sleeps every night!

Another plug for the Tailspot! Great fish. I also have a black combtooth blenny in another tank and it also has a great personality. Very cool looking fish too - it's just a dark gray/black

@united417 I had to look really hard to see your Smith's blenny...that's pretty funny.

To the OP, I too love my Tailspot blenny. Not aggressive towards anyone else except occasionally with my Yellow Watchman gobies, but it's just for display - they never touch each other.

Harptail blenny!!

Always was out swimming if the lights were on. Ate first 5 minutes and ate everything. Never bothered anything fish, coral nor invert. Great personaility, came to me when I went to tank.

I have had lawnmower (aggressive) and midas (recluse sometimes). IMO harptail is better.

I already voted for the Tailspot blenny but the Starry blenny is also very cool..had one in an old tank of mine. Lay there like under a sunshade..

I think it doesn´t really matter which blenny you choose - most of them have a great personality.

I have a regular bicolor and he's a great little fish. I sometimes go for days without seeing him because he's in my 300g tank. I am always amused when he pokes his head out of a new hole.

Completely agree. Awesome fish. Mine ate all types of food and quite a bit of algae off the rocks.

yanno, i thought about editing the picture with a circle or something around it to make it "pop". But then i remembered the feeling i had peering into the tank and not seeing him for the first time...so you guy can share my pain, gladly for just a split second :fun2:
