Feather Duster Splitting

I've got this really big feather duster, and it appears to be starting to split. The 'feathers' are joined in two different bunches at the mouth of the worm. Is this normal and is there anything different I should do to make sure they split without harm.

Coco worms do it all the time, so I'm guessing feather dusters can as well. I have never witnessed a feather doing it though.
