The subject for this contest will be... SOFT CORALS

Choose your best/favorite soft coral photo and post it here. Single corals, groups of corals, corals with or without fish- just as long as there is a soft coral as a main part of your image you're ready to go. One image per person please. On February 20th we'll close the thread and begin voting. As in the last contest, maximum image size (in the longest dimension) should be 900 pixels, and the maximum file size is 150K. If your photo is chosen as the winner you will be asked to provide the photo in full resolution so keep that in mind. Next November we'll vote on the best photos from each of the contests and choose 12 of them to appear in the 2008 Reef Central Calendar .
Good luck everyone :)

As i look at "Corals- a quick reference guide" by Julian Sprung, i see that Gorgonians are listed under soft corals. So being that he's more qualified than me, i consider it as a soft coral.

I am not sure how strict they wish to draw the boundaries. Technically speaking, pperez is correct, neither Ricordea nor Zoanthid sp. are soft corals. They are more anemone than coral.

Check Bourneman's book and he also states this.

Normally I'd not worry too much about classification but since this is a contest, and contests are defined by rules, I think it would be best to stick to corals that truly fall under the "soft coral" umbrella. Blackheart and Nikon_Guy-- have no fear- you'll get to post those excellent shots in a future contest... trust me on that :p But in the mean time, if you could please send me links to replacement pics? I will edit the posts so the new pictures appear instead of the zoos and mushroom polyps.
Thanks guys,
Greg

so what you are looking for is leathers not all soft corals right? I think i have somethngalong those lines. By the way great i dea it is a blast posting pics here and seeing everyone elses pics. thanks again

Blackheart

Any picture that has a soft coral as a big part of the image. Leathers, Carnations, Pipe Organs, Green Star Polyps, Gorgonians, Xenia, etc. When I came up with this subject I was thinking of close-ups and groupings of corals, or even full tank shots. They don't have to be void of non-softies (or fish for that matter) but the soft coral should be a main part of the image.
