FEED MORE..........>> Now Cyanao

DID I SOUNDS SMRT??
Noticing that my SPS had lightened up a bit in a couple of months I started feeding about double what I would normally. The colors are better but I have 2 patches of red slime on my sand bed.

Everything is doing great so I dont wanna change my feeding regime now. I have a SSB with corse grain agrogate. I blow the rocks and sand clean every week. The flow in the lower part of the tank isnt super high but as high as my frogspawn, bubble and hammer will take. I also have a couple of fairly large clams down there.

What do you think the cause is and will it go away on its own??

I would just siphon it out for now. If it comes back you might want to try running the skimmer wetter.

Overfeeding = Nutrients = Algae/Cyano Problems. The number one pollutant of aquariums is food (over feeding). Thought of target feeding instead but less often?

Run skimmer wetter.....I might try that. Increase flow....maybe but like I said I gotz clams and LPS down there too.

As far as spot feeding....I dont feed the corals...just fish.

Is red slime after phosphates or nitrates?? would phosban help??

Phosphates.

Cyano can synthesize nitrate from N2 gas (in your water, air, etc), so nitrate limiting it does nothing.

Run the water level in the skimmer higher so that the skimmate is more watery. You take out more nutrients skimming that way though (good and bad).

I have the same problem, but it sounds like i have quite a bit more than you. i have peeled it off but after a while it still comes back, did stop when i was doseing vodka.

Phosphates. Cyano can synthesize nitrate from N2 gas (in your water, air, etc), so nitrate limiting it does nothing.

How low do you need to get this though, mine are at 0.01 (colormeter and deltec) No3 are very low also.

Do you think there are any other causes

If you have cyano then your phosphates will read 0 or very close... that is what it feeds off of. It is a false reading... phosphates is the problem and is a biproduct of everything.... low flow and excess nutrients are the only causes of cyano and not matter how much flow if you have too many nutrients in the water it will appear somewhere if even a pink haze on your glass.

increase flow to the area....only feed more IF you have a good enough nutrient export system(flow to keep up and into overflows and then a good skimmer and possibly a fuge with macro. Feeding more, or at least more often is very good for fish and coral colors if you can then export the extra nutrients and waste ;)

Eagles.....my SPS look better then ever. Like I said they were getting lighter in color. I have an ASM G3 that should be good for about a moderate 180g on my 55g tank....so Im really over skimming. I have about 40x flow in my tank.

Your bulbs may have shifted. I believe that's why I have cyano.... The bulbs will be here next week, so I'll let you know if that solves my problem. Good luck!

The two area's in question are getting very good flow. I dont run any phospate removers......should I ?

I would perform a 5 gal water change once a week by syphoning out the cyano for a month and see what happens. One other thing to look at is your RO/DI quality.

Yup, running PO4 removers willbe very beneficial IMHO. Start slow and with low amounts of the media so that the reduction of PO4 levels wont shock your corals.
