I have the MP40W. I have never used the Tunze TS12. The LFS, also has a Sales, Leasing, set-up and cleaning business. They have installed hundreds of tanks, primarily business. Mine was the first MP40W and they are impressed enough to move to Eco-Tech from Tunze as a primary powerhead.

dont like the thrust bearing design, loudest thing on my tank, wires easily pull from the motor and controller housing.

would i buy it again? ya.

just for fun im going to machine some thrust bearings in.

They are kind of loud in pulse mode. At least it is more noticeable anyway. I currently have it in reef crest mode at 75% and don't notice it. My fans are louder.

I have had both Vortechs, a Mp20 and now a Mp40w. They rock and I will never go back to another pump. Well worth the money IMO.

I love my vortechs. They are a little loud for about a day till they are broken in. I'd never go back to wires in my tank....ever.

Love my two Vortechs on my 120. Its nice to buy something and just know its handled, in this case water movement. As my Acroporas grow I just dial up the intensity its handled and I like that.

so vortechs are pretty loud?

They can be depending on your setup. If your setup is extremely quiet- then you will hear them. If you have alot of other noise from skimmers. fans, pumps, and noisy overflow- then it blends in very easily.

I have owned 3(2 gen1, 1 gen2) and they were all far too noisy. All noise came from the dry side, so it was not alignment, and could be heard 15+ feet away- a "buzzing"(whirring) sound. Tunzes are alot quieter, being in the tank with water buffering the sound.

Both great pumps, great service, and high quality.

both are great

bad about vortechs are the nosie and needing to replace wetside assembly once in a while, also it sucks when they fall off the tank!

tunze, only bad really is the wire in the tank, but I like the use of the magnets on them a lot more

I've had/have both. I dumped the Tunze's for the Vortech when the Tunze's died and they changed the format of the motors and transformers.

Vortech from here on out.

I have been very happy with my Tunze's They have done great, are whisper quiet and quite a bit cheaper then the vortech....I hate wires but came up with a decent way to hide them and have been happy ever since...My big key is a whisper quiet tank....I DO NOT want to hear anything when Im on my couch

Wow, there are so many of these threads the mods should just make one sticky....

I have had both (Gen 1 & Gen 2). I use only Tunze now. My tank is uber quiet and the vortechs level of noise was not acceptable to me. If your tank has the normal humming and gurgling, you may find they are quiet enough.

I also like to be able to mount my pumps on the back wall and point them down the length of the tank. I know you dont need to "aim" a vortech but I found the Tunze's to be less noticable in my tank.

The flow from vortech is truely excellent, especially in a tank <6 ft long.

Both companies are top notch. My belief is that tunze pumps are more reliable than vortech. The average user seems to be more likely to have trouble free operation of a Tunze. This is partially related to the design differences (less prone to user error) and partially because Tunze is a more mature company and product line. This is not meant to be slam against Vortech (Ecotech Marine). They really are a good company and make a high quality product. You would be hard pressed to find complaints about customer service from either company.
