Feedback on 10g sump

I'm interested in setting up a 10g sump under my 29g tank and need some last minute feedback. My main goal since space is so limited is to have a refugium and a filter sock. I doubt I'll have a skimmer as I aim to have a small bioload. How does this look?

so 8" water level inside sump, will you have enough room for drain during shut down? unlike the first drawing you have 6 inches

Actually I believe now my design will look something like this... Still has bubble traps and will not be a pain to assemble... Thoughts?

Sure, that should work. Just make sure your return is kept close to the surface so you only drain back a gallon or so when pump is off.

Have you done the math on power off capacity? The last one looks ok to me, but run the numbers to be sure. You need to also consider the drainlevel of your tank.

My return nozzle is drilled and the hole is 1/4" under the surface. :)
One thing this hobby will teach you is: that hole will be clogged when you have a power outage. A snail will be on it. Algae will build up and you will "get to it tomorrow."

For every inch your tank back flows, you'll gain 3" in your sump since you have a 3:1 ratio. Always, always, always be redundant. Have a check valve you can easily clean. Have enough room in the sump. Have a leak detector too.

Eliminate the first baffle on the "in" side. This is how I have my 10g sump set up on my 29g.

Assume you plan to use chaeto in refugium. If so:
My short list of changes are...
1. Lose the Under baffle on the right.
2. Lower the right Over baffle to 7"
3. Lower the height of the left side under baffle to 7" (keep the 1" bottom gap).
4. Get rid of the far left over baffle.
5. Put in a 1.5" over baffle about 1.5" to the left of the under baffle. This creates an area to put bagged activated charcoal or Purigen type media. Have a piece of gutter guard (the black plastic mesh ) to use as a guard to keep chaeto from going over the Over baffle into the return pump section.

Im in the process of setting up a 10 gallon sump for my 29 gallon as well. I plan to go with a baffless sump, the water level will be consistent with my ATO for my skimmer. In most cases a ATO costs as much as a few baffles do and you never have to refill your tank again
