To be used as you are saying then i say they would work good..But to me the only issue with any canister set up is that if the power goes out for any extended time is that it can go anaerobic
Never really had a problem with my Eheim 2217. It was a major pod breading ground. Whenever I cleaned it out, I would filter out the pods and put back in my tank.
I think I still have it if you want it for cheap. It needs a new plastic cover ($20 at Aquarium) because on of the hose lines is cross-threaded and leaks.
Thanks for the replies. I have lots of large tubing that could likely do the same thing running from my garage tothe tank Dave. I just plan to keep media and no floss in the filter and change the carbon every 3 weeks or so so hopefully it won't be a problem.
$25 or a moderate-sized piece of live rock for my 24G nano seems reasonable given the slow drip leak. And I'll throw in the quick-disconnects on the supply and return lines.
I can even give you the ceramic rings I used a pre-filter if you like. Not sure whether it is good for reef tanks or not, but I had all kinds of life growing on them when I last took it down.
