Feedback on Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 IS‏

Hello camera gurus!! So i am getting into the photography side of this awesome hobby and I understand that the camera body isnt as important as the lens. I found a great deal on a Canon 70-300mm f4-f5.6 IS‏ and my question is, will this lense work to get high quality macro shots? As stated, i am rather new to photography, ive read raving reviews on this lens but I would like to hear from photographers who have the same passion as i do! Thank you for any help!! :beer:
