Per the latest studies by James Fatherree - in Giant Clams in the Sea and the Aquarium - clams (even the smallest) have more than enough symbiotic algae to live without actually being "fed". It's a great book - would suggest everyone who wants clams borrow a copy from your club/library or pick it up.
