Feeding open brain

I purchased a open brain about a week ago and it is looking great. I got misys in the pack that has little cubes and I feed it half a cube a day. Is this too much food? Every time I feed it, the tentacle are out and they retract to take the food in and in about ten minutes they are out again. I can see that it takes the food in so he gets it all. Any help would be super..

Thanks,

Chris

HI

HI

Hi Bro i also use to feed my open brain:p but don't over feed them. only once 1 week or every 3day will do also give them alot of light :bum: than your open brain will grown very fast

Not totally sure about all the faces. But I don't think he was saying its a stupid question.

Most people feed them every 2-3 days. The half a cube seems like a good amount maybe feed a little more if you switch to every third day/as it gets bigger. I also feed mine formula 1 flake in addition to mysis.

Otherwise sounds like you are doing good.

ok bro shannahan14 sorry. the faces are not saiding that you ask an stupid question. just that i am use to use faces alot sorry if i had offen you sorry.

what iam trying to said is. its good to feed them but do not over feed.

Like many LPS corals open brains prefer something substantial like mysis/brine shrimp/ etc ... phyto would not be considered an ideal food source. As far as frequency that something you need to experiment with ... I feed most of my LPS every 10 days or so and they do just fine .... some feed weekly some twice a week .. daily feeding seems inappropriate to me.

Hope this helps.

brains arent equiped to eat phyto, however they can beneft from eating copapods that are a result of the phyto feeding.

I was not offended at all. Just a little confused about the faces. So the first five days his tentacles came out so i fed him every night. Last night his tentacles did not come out so i took that as him being full. It looks like it is about 1/4" larger in only a week. So maybe i will slow up on the feedings so he dont outgrow my 26Gal too fast. Oh, i feed it Misys.

Is it possable to feed an open brain which does not extend its feeders?

I have had a brain for 3 weeks and have yet to see it extend feeders.

I'm having the same problem and its very difficult for me to feed it even with the top of a 2 liter on it.When I place the food on its mouth it starts to puff up and the food rolls off since the tenticles aren't out to grab it.

Tonight I left the food on him for a few hours covered with the 2 liter top on it and it seemed to eat a few peices. It got alot puffier then normal but still no tenticles.

jafoca and 3S1K,
How long after the lights go out are you waiting before you try to feed? Some nights it will take my brain 30-40 minutes to really open up. Also I noticed that even if the tank lights are out but a light is on near the tank the brain won't really open up.

IMO the best feeding time is before lights on. Make sure the sun isn't up yet and the room where the reef tank is in is mostly dark. This is the best time to see your brains feeders out. But this is only necessary if you wish to feed him.

Open brain coral do not need to be target fed unless they are not doing well in your tank. Brains that are either sickly looking or have open wounds may be target fed to help promote faster healing and/or recovery.

If you wanna feed your brain, go ahead. But this is not necessary for it to live!

I have an 8" open brain and he has not been target fed in almost a full year!

I feed it every three days now. It actually extended its tentacles while i was acclimating it. Thanks for the help every one.

Feeding the brain

I feed mine whenever, I don't feed anything at any set time. I figure that they don't eat between 5-6 am in the ocean so why have a set time in our tanks. I have fed in the dark, mid-day, just actinics it doesn't matter when. I feed mine pieces of krill or silverside. And he grows good and looks good.

Here is a pic of when I first got it:

And a year later:

I feed mine tonight with one light on and then about 10min later I shut it off.I floated my brain inside a bowl in the tank and it worked very well.He ate alot of the shrimp I feed it but I still didn't seen any tenticles,I'm glad to know he is eating though.I hope he colors up so more he's been bleached for quit sometime.
