Feeding Seahorses

How often do you feed your seahorses a day?

I am feeding mine Hikari Mysis twice a day. But don't know if I am over feeding them.

Thanks!

I alternate once per day and the next day twice and I skip Fridays. I have been feeding hikari mysis also, but am switching to PE as soon as the hikari is gone. The horses seem fine with this feeding.

Chris.... PE mysis is better ;) Much higher protein than Hikari and they are much bigger shrimp. I normally feed my Kuda two times a day. Sometimes three if I notice them sitting in the feeding dish.

Hi,

I usually feed my horses at least three times a day, but of course just small portions.

They are always hungry and I think it is quite hard to overfeed horses ;)

I feed mine Hikari mysis once a day (my schedule really only allows one feeding per day) - 2 cubes for 4 medium size seahorses and they are fat - I'm seriously considering cutting down on their food.

Because of my work, I feed at 5:30pm and again at 10:30pm. I combine some PE mysis and Hikari Mysis. But I think I am going to cut back to just once per day.

Do you guys turn off the pumps when you feed? I do
Do use feeding trays or target feed? I use an acrylic tray suctioned to
the front glass.

I love pe, wish I could get it local! But most of the time I feed hikari 2 times a day sometimes 3. I just let it thaw in tank water, pour off junky extra water and dump it in. I find my little ones like to eat 2 or 3 times a day but my adult will only come down and eat at one of those feedings. I don't use a station or target feed. I drop it in the same side of the tank each time and we have no problems with that.

I thaw it, rinse it, and dump it in front of the filter return so it floods the whole tank. I tap the container against the top of the tank a few times to signal dinner time and they all come and get it - I watch long enough to see that everyone is eating. In about 5 minutes the water column is empty then they cruise around checking out the macro and rocks for the rest of the food. I like the idea that they get to hunt for some of their food and I think it keeps them a bit more active.

What is PE mysis? and hikari mysis? What is the different. I always though mysis is mysis. I didn't know there was a different kind.

pe is pesciline energetics (sp?) its a brand. Hikari is also a brand.

If I remember correctly, its been several years that I researched it, mysis is a stage of development for shrimp. So buying "mysis" shrimp only means you are buying baby shrimp basically.

I think some of the shrimp (bahia (sp?)) are always very small and commonly called "mysis shrimp" but thats just slang. So the different brands use different "mysis" shrimp and have different nutrient values. PE is the best, I'm not sure whats after that but I believe its hikari. But because they are all different its best to mix or change it up every now and again to be complete.

Anyone ever try black worms to feed with or blood worms? Is mysis the only thing anyone has ever fed a SH?

Well I am feeding Frozen Hikari Mysis as their stable diet. I am offering them Frozen Brine shrimp, which they actually love (I think it smells more), and have also offered Hikari Ocean Plankton, which they will eat regularly. Like I said, Mysis is their main stable food, but I don't see a problem with feeding them additional food that they actually eat. The Plankton is cool because it is vey whole and intact. Practically looks alive (in some way), instead of this Brine mushy stuff. You all know what I mean.

I've so far only fed mysis (pe and hikari)
I understand that mysis should be the predominant food, but do others mix it up a little? Frozen Brine shrimp, krill, formula one or two etc.
Does anyone feel it might do the horses harm?

no harm right? I don't think so. I think that Mysis as a stable diet is your best option, but I do feel that it is good to feed the horses plankton (if they eat it), and brine to give them different nutritional values. Would you love to steak every night of your life? Probably not. :) Does anyone disagree with me?
