Feeding stations

Does anyone make use of a feeding station when feeding seahorses mysis shrimp or brine shrimp? Do you make them or can you buy them?(if so from where?) I've heard different things about them and was wondering if it was worth looking into using one?

Yup, use one, made it myself, don't know if you can buy one.

Its basically a tube and a tray/holder of some sort. The tube is to guide food into the holder. I used acrylic tubing a piece of acrylic and a plastic petri dish to build mine.

It keeps the food in one area and the horses know when and where to come for food.

doesn't it blow all over when you use a turkey baster? Do they like the shell on the bottom of the tank or should it be suspended? I'm glad I found this post, I was wondering the same thing...
oh, if you have a tube, do you just put the mysis in the tube and it slowly falls into the dish?

I would put in the thawed mysis with my fingers. Some would float away, but most of it staying in the shell. Some horses take to feeding stations, some like to "hunt" the scattered mysis off the rockwork and substrate, or while it's floating around the water column.

what a great photo! I have a few shells very similar to that... I thought that the shrimp may continue up into the smaller part of the shell and rot... is that not a problem?

I cut out the part that spirals into the center, and ground it out smooth with a Dremel. It's like a bowl inside.

I use a simple model (purchased) that is easy to make as you can see below. My seahorses took to it in less than 36 hours and will target feed from it very reliably. Its not pretty, but for the breeder tanks its quite fine. The vertical tube allows me to squirt the vitamin soaked food slurry cleanly, whereby most of it settles in the tray as hoped.

Dont use one, I like watching them hunt for there food. They check every nook and cranny for food, hanging upside down and every which way. Just amazing to watch them move about the tank.

I use chaeto macro (the greed brillo pad stuff). The shrimps sit on and inside it which gives the horses easy access, but lets them hunt it too.

I used a piece of 1/2 inch acrilic tubing.
Then I cut the bottom off a lees specimen container.
Fun DIY... Looks great + cheap. Cost like 5 dollars total.

A step up from my glad container.
