Feeding tangs brcocoli and romain?

I have read frequently that people feed there tangs brocoli and romain lettuce? What type of preperations and what type of brocoli/romain do they feed these tangs? Are these as healthy as regular saltwater algae strips? Any info/articles on this would be great

Freezing or boiling the Romaine lettuce leaves will break down the cell walls and make the lettuce more digestible. I personally have not had much luck getting a tang to eat broccoli, but it should be similarly treated first.

Only if you donate to the cause. :)

I have no experience with this, which is why I'm reading this thread, but I did want to put my $.02 in. Breaking down the cell walls makes vegetables more digestable. However, the process to do so make "cook away" some nutrients.

Many believe that freezing breaks down cell walls. Others believe in puree'ing to do it. You can find lots of info on this topic searching the net regarding feeding dogs and cats a raw food diet.

This is from the previous post like Recty mentioned.

"Ok, I will post on my personal experiences. I acquired a blonde naso that was raised for 5 yrs entirely on romaine lettuce. He is a beauty and grew at a great rate while in his care. I never knew of using romaine until buying this fish from a fellow reefer.
I have 13 tangs and feed them 4 huge leafs a day along with 4 sheets of nori a day. I have had all my tangs over three years and am proud to say they are beautiful. My growth rate is crazy. All fish have double and even tripled in size. I feel after 3 yrs of success of feeding romaine, I can honestly say I couldn't imagine not using it. It works.
I don't steam or anything. I just clean and throw in the tank.
If my personal experience don't help you. The georiga aquarium feeds romaine and broccolli daily to its reef tank."

Mote Marine Labratory here in florida feeds their angels and tangs broccoli and romaine, they really seemed to love it and came right to it when the guy was putting it in.the large angels were actually the first to munch on it.

I have been feeding my tangs romaine along with their other stuff (nori, mysis, formula 1 & 2) for years. I have yet to see any bad effects from it. I have personally seen Thor's tank many times and have yet to see a collection of fish better than his other than a public aquarium!

Ive never seen much benifit of feeding romain other then its something to fill them up since they like eating all the time.

I have seen good results from feeding carrot shavings and brocoli though. I forget what vitamins it has but it seems to help with HLLE.

that and they also seem to enjoy a orange wedge or rind every so often.

My general concensus is that land food and sea food is different and unless your shooting for a specific vitamin or similar there isnt much point in feeding land food to sea critters.

I heard about romain and brocoli, but carrots and oranges? That is crazy! I guess I will have to experiement what works with my tangs and angels.

I am going to try the romaine. Hopefully it will fatten up my yellow Tangs. I can't seem to keep them filled out

This will help along with feeding them romaine. I have a 12 inch Red Sea that has a double chin!!! Love the bulldog!!!

I just dropped some Romaine in. But there are little suspicious yet.

We raise Bulldogs. I have a litter now but the economy is not helping:lol:
