Trebble hooks through the face/mouth or half swallowed hooks and it's a moot point.
A better question is how was it caught. But even better than that, did they have a fishing license and is it legal fishing for bass this time of year in that area or was it under/over max/min size for the area.
Yes I live in NY city and the fish was a striped bass 36" and 15 lb,
all vey legal.
I didn't know it was pregnant when I caught it and I did feel very badly about it. A friend suggested I keep the eggs for the coral.
Thanks

Bring a nice set of wire clippers with you, and just cut as many of the tines off the hook as you can. Fish can swallow trebles and they just rot away. If you've got a spawning female, save the fish, not the lure.
I save a lot of marine fish eggs when we go offshore fishing. I would suspect that fish eggs from freshwater would not have quite the levels of Omega-3 fatty acids, but that is just an educated guess. BTW, I don't think there is any law in NC aqainst keeping egg bearing fish. I've read through the regulations many times and never seen anything about it. Different states have different laws though. It is not always easy to tell if they have eggs or not if it is the early stages, and most fishermen would not be able to tell a male from a female bass, so that would be a hard law to enforce.
I've lost $30 lures from grouper inhaling them, and if they're not legal, they get to keep the lure. I don't think twice about returning a fish to the ocean that's swallowed a hook.
