Few pics of my 180 SPS Reef with Ray

That is an amazing amount of growth!! Do you have a calcium reactor? Is that a 6 foot tank?

No calcium reactor. I dose a homemade 2 part solution. Baking soda, prestone driveway heat and Epson salts for mag. And yes its a 180g 6' tank. I've got some vids taken. Just need to upload when I get home.
 
Not trying to be '"ray police" but that sand looks very rocky, if the ray isnt able to bury himself or scratches the underside of his disc while trying they will get infections very easily and die rather quickly. I kept two cali rays for a few years and even with my sand being super fine i still had to be carefull with some larger peices of crushed coral so they wouldnt get scratched up, Mine also were very close to outgrowing my 300 gallon tank within two years. They also like colder temps(70-72) which i noticed was a problem with mine and had to keep my tank much cooler than usual which i can imagine you wouldnt want to do with some of your SPS..
 
All views are appreciated. I've considered adding a bag or two of some finer sand. So far he has no trouble burying himself. As far as grow out is concerned, once he out grows the tank I will donate/sell him to a good home. Then buy another juvenile.

do the LPS sting the ray ?

some finner sand will go a long way, rays with a cut wont make it long unfortunately as I experienced, been breeding them for a long while. [freshwater and salt]

now how is the system filtered ? rays can get prety messy ! and the SPS coloration look prety good ! in stingray tanks, you will know water quality or oxygen is low when the ray doesnt accept food, but in your tank SPS would show it first :)

I have been thinking of adding one to my 180 as well. for a long time. only worries were LPS stinging the ray,. and also the ray making a sand storm all the time. this is giving me hopes again to try it :D

Well I came home today and found the Ray was wedged in my big millipora colony. U can tell he tried to get out. There was a few small scratches on his top where the branches had pinned him. This morning when I left he was buried in the sand in his corner spot. I wish my family was more attentive to my tank. I had a 17 year old daughter in the living room with the tank all day and she never even looked at or even noticed that a 180 gallon tank was 6' to her left. Or even a 5" stingray probably flapping away in a frenzy at the top of the tank. Sorry about the rant, but I'm rather upset that he died. I take very good care of my livestock and spend more time on the tank than I do my family sometimes. Hate it when I lose fish. FYI I will more than likely NOT be purchasing another one as long as I have large SPS colonies.

Note to self. Stingray NOT reef safe.

My display tank a week. QT for 3-4 weeks. I would of thought acclimation but he never showed any weird signs and he was wedged pretty damn good into the coral. It took alot to get him out. He was active, eating out of my hands, buried himself often, no other fish picked on him, no abnormal breathing, etc.

Ive been depressed since Ive gotten home. Kinda sucks losing something that was pretty exciting and that I know I will not have again anytime in the near future.

EDIT: Sorry about your loss :( I didnt see page #2! AHHH. I had a ray before. For 3 years, then lost him randomly. Ive always wanted to get another.
 
I am really sorry for your loss. You can tell by the number of responses that you have intrigued and impressed most people here at RC. Of course you are hurt since most reefers care about their tanks but try to focus on the positive experiences you had with the Ray.
 
Cali rays should be in a very fine sand bottom, with very low temps( in comparison to an sps tank) wth ALOT of open swimming room. I think you have an AMAZING SPS tank and for you to have kept both, one of them wasnt going to do well( either the sps or the ray) for alot of various reasons( temps, sand, flow, swimming room) but i do commend you for tryign and especially for bieng honest with everyone so that more people dont try this combo unless they have all all the correct params for the ray. Rays are messy and crazy swimmers if i had your tank iw ouldnt even want to risk the chance since it is such an awesome tank.

Loosing any animal sucks and im sorry to hear about that but the bright side is your tank is very nice!!
