I'd use a plastic cover made for this instead. It's short of shaped like a long shot glass with slits in it.
The mesh might clog too easy, affect the rate of the drain and cause extra noise. The LFS sell the piece to which I am referring for a few dollars.

Don't ask me, I'm wrong.
it's act ually for a pump i am making just to move water in the tank i have these old pieces around and kinda modded them and they are pushing about 600 gallons apiece and are pretty small I htink they would be a neat addition to the tank the only problem is where the water comes into it at has no cover at all and to get one around it the matireal needs to be very flexable and I haven't seen a plastic that will work but doing some research last night it looks as though fiberglass (or at least some kinds of it) can cause fiberglass poisoning
