Fiji Blue Slimer - pics & story

Chris at Reefer Madness (www.reefermadness.us) pledged corals for my classroom reef tank - 7th grade Biology in CT.

Reefer Madness donated a show coral and four sweet frags - gratis, no charge for corals or shipping. They were sent out first thing Monday morning, arriving Tuesday in Connecticut.

Tuesday was awesome in the classroom - ok, most days are awesome - anyhow, check out this H-U-G-E 'FIJI TRUE-BLUE SLIMER' (A. formosa) - this is 3 hours in my system on Tuesday:

I will take some additional pics tomorrow for an update - I swear this slimer is already growing rapidly...

THANK YOU TO REEFERMADNESS!!!

In fact, Chris called me back this evening just to check in with me to find out how the corals are doing and to discuss some SPS husbandry techniques...personal service is RARE!

that's sweet, that tank looks great too, all my biology classes have sucked, i've never been in any biology class that actually had any live animals to work with in the class room. That's really cool that you have done that for your students.

Really great of them to provide some frags too

That's great! I'm glad everything worked out! And that is a real nice show piece your school have there!

Most of the system is automated, I come back once a week to check systems and refill top-off reservoir...custodians call me if they notice any major issues...this has worked for 2 summers already.

I turn off the system for a day and cover it in plastic when the strip, seal and wax the floors in my room - nasty smelling chemicals...

Hey PITSTOP,
I see Chris gave you Monty's lubrication factory :)

Anway, Your tank looks excellent, esspecially with the slimer as the showpiece!

Pineapplehouse (kevin...I think)
Hey Steve, how's it goin? :) I've gotten Greg, Glen, but never Kevin :)

Take Care!
Graham

I believe a Formosa is a Formosa. A "blue slimer" is a Acropora Yongeii. Very close and often mistaken for one another. Both are stunning stags.

Dear Pitstop,

I am glad that the A. formosa came in well but please keep us posted on that Red and Blue Tipped A. hyacinthus that was delayed by Fed-ex. I know that we have been emailing you back and forth about its health but they can tank after a few days.

It was amazing to me that the Tabletop actually arrived to you in relatively good condition after being delayed 24 hours. I always expect the worst when it comes to Fed-ex delays, that's why I am pleasently surprised that a table (of all corals) came through so well... I kept on thinking of your students and how they might to react to a stinky, dead skeleton. I know that the color isn't quite there but hopefully as soon as it recovers from the delay and adapts to your system the colors should gradually come back.

Please let us know how the corals respond to your system in the upcoming weeks and months. I again apologize for Fed-ex and their "mechanical delay". Delay's only happen about 1% of the time but when they do, it sure is stressful for us and the recipient. I have been doing this for a decade now and delay's have really not gotten any easier. Many a weekend have been ruined by shipping delays. So anyone thinking that it would be great owning their own coral internet shop think again :) ... I am just kidding but there are those days....

Enjoy your new additions and have a great one,

Chris @ RM

On another note: Green Slimer's are a mis-nomer. They were originally identified as a A. yongei. A. yongei have completely different corallite structure to A. formosa. If you look closely at the radial corallites you can see that A. yongei have larger and not nearly as many secondary corallites where A. formosa have many more secondary corallites. I have compared both the Green Slimer from Bali and the Blue Slimer from Fiji and they have exactly the same corallite structure. I also thought that any slimer was a A. yongei but as I got further into my years of owning this business I found that the corallites matched the A. formosa and not the A. yongei check the following links:

I know that these are my ID's, but alot of time and study have gone into them and if you check Veron you can see that they match his photos and descriptions pretty well.

I hope this helps,

Chris @ RM

YOU TURN OFF THE SYSTEM FOR A DAY? I'm guessing not the whole system?

nunez1980 - curse you! I loooooooove that colony, green with the fuscia tip fries my neurons! Even though I can't afford that colony right now, no one should have bought that; it should have remained available for the next 4 months until I am ready...just kidding of course!

Isn't it amazing that at ReeferMadness you actually get the colony that appears on their website? You think, 'hmmm....it couldn't really look that nice in person', then you get it and are blown away!

I have both a "green slimer" and a green A. yongei... I can vouch that they have VERY different corallite structures...

Reefermadness strikes again! What an incredible operation. Graham has been a very valuable resource to this forum as lost as I can recall. I've not dealt with Chris yet, but I see an order in the near future. It's stuff like this that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside... fuzzy enough to place an order. :)
