I just put a Fiji Yellow Toadstool in my 34gal Solana. It's been about 5 days now, and the polyps don't seem to want to come out. The coral is nicely "ruffled", but it's fairly small and the polyps don't seem to want to come out. It seems that the polyps start to come out a bit right before my light (150w MH Pendant) comes on, which is also the time when there is a very little bit of sunlight (not direct, it's just not pitch black) coming through my window. I'm curious to know if anyone has any problem-solving success stories with this coral. I realize some do great and a lot don't, and a sometimes you just get lucky. Because of this, I'm mostly interested in hearing about the coral not doing well and then eventually doing great --whether it was due to more/less flow, placement, light, or even it just took 2-3 weeks before the coral was happy. Any tips from anyone?

The Fiji yellows like SPS type conditions. Ie. LOTS of flow and LOTS of Lights.
Otherwise, just keep your parameters stable, and try not to handle or touch the leather to much as they are known to bruise pretty easily, and can break down due to secondary bacterial infections afterwards.

It's common especially in the night. Day time they typically open up and night they go down. However I too have had some and in fact have one right now that it's polyps only come out maybe once a week. What works for me in triggering it is a slight increase in Iodide. The polyps tend to to open up for feeding time triggered by this and after they open I feed real live phytoplankton (not dead preserved stuff that smells like that DT's stuff). Sorry guys if you like DT's, I don't and did a test on it and found every bottle I've ever bought was full of Ammonia (but this is getting off the topic).

Make sure it's stable too. If it rocks even a little, it will be unhappy.

Correct. 5 days is actually a pretty short time for a Fiji to find itself 100% happy. I think you'll be just fine.

wow i got one last weekend it was fully open in about 10 minutes in the tank. it is looking fine. It is a frag 2 in high 3 in across. I have it very high in my tank. i have seen it eat rotifers, and reef chili
Mine took about a week to fully open back up. It wasnt until I put it in the direct path of one of the return lines (about 675-700 gph out of that line) and right under the 250 MH. For some reason it likes to be pounded by the water flow. It has literally doubled in size in a month. If I move it out of the flow... its polyps subside and srivles up until I move it back into the flow. It opens back up in less than 5 minutes and is happy again....
So, who knows. I couldnt imagine anything growing while getting blasted like that, but it seems to prefer it and grows accordingly.
