File copy - rename and backup

I was moving some files from my CF cards last night and thought I'd share a free utility I've been using for a couple of years now.

I decided a couple of years ago to name and organize my files by date. The utility can handle other schemes as well.

So a file name for me is "mmddyy-hhmmss.cr2" and my directory structure is "C:\images\yyyy\mm\original\" you can even go to the day but I don't take enough pictures to bother with that. So a picture from last Christmas would be c:\Images\2007\12\original\122507-074322.cr2

Here's where the utility comes in, I copy all new files to c:\new Images\. I then run the DIM utility and it renames the files by date and time and moves them into the c:\Images\yyyy\mm\original directory structure, creating directories when needed. But it also copies a duplicate to my external hard drive :I\Image backup\yyyy\mm\original directory structure.

Here's the link DIM 4.0

If your using raw files you need to add the extension to the list of file types. Also if like me you have older CRW files and the .THM files add both extensions and check the box for special canon files.

ImageIngester works pretty well too.

Truth be told, I don't use either anymore. I generally just let Lightroom pull the images off the card, convert to DNG, do file renaming, initial key-wording and organization by date.

TimeMachine does one backup and I have a scripted backup that runs automatically syncing my images to two additional external drives.

Man I woud kill for a script like that!

And you claim to be an IT geek.

It's just some custom wrappers around rsync.
