filter bag

Hi folks;

I am a reef keeper in Turkey. And there has been an issue wondering in my mind for a long time.

In Turkey, we are still discussing the pros and cons of filter bag and/or fiber usage in the sumps.

What are your suggestions regarding the usage of these type of filter media in the sump?

Should I use them? If yes. How should I use them?

thanks...

This subject should probably be addressed in the Lighting & Filtration column.

Filter bags have been debated here in U.S. & Canada, too. Some think it is excellent method to prevent detritus from building up in the sump, eliminates small microbubbles from the drain line from entering into the main tank display, and allows for clearer water in the main display. Others are concerned that small copepods and other fauna will be filtered and not be able to contribute to the main display.

I think they are a good idea as long as the bags are cleaned or replaced frequently. I have had my 92 gallon tank for almost 7 years without filter bags, but I did just order some bags to start using.

Tell everyone in Turkey - hello!

I've been using them for a few months. I love them. Ever since I started using them my skimmer has been working better, because the pump filter isn't getting clogged with junk.

But yes, I agree with above post, there is a lot of debate!
