filter compartment in tank

My tank has about a 3" wide 13" deep back compartment for filtration. I feel like bio-balls or any type of mechanical filtration will just become nitrate traps so I was wondering if I should put some LR rubble, macroalgae, or something else back there? Or should I put nothing in there?

Do you have a picture of the layout of the back of that tank? I would expect you can get some live rock or even make a very small fuge depending on the setup. But you may have to do a little modding to the water flow back there.

yeah I could probably fit some rubble or chaeto back there I just wonder if it'd even be worth it since I already have a 29g fuge that is going to be plumbed to my tank?
