Filter media to use after cycle?

I have an Aquaclear 70 and currently cycling my 40b. Currently it has a foam insert, act carbon, and a biomax insert. Do I keep all three inserts in the filter after the cycle is completed? Is there a better insert to use afterwards? Currently only planning a fowlr tank, may add equipment later for reef tank.

Those filter media will populate with the bacteria you need for the cycle to complete. Removing all of the media would result in your tank starting all over. Removing some of the media may start a mini cycle. Normally you try not to remove all of your media at one time.

If you have live rock in the tank, you don't really need the biomax insert. All that is are pieces of rock for bacteria to grow on, but that is what what live rock is for as well. The carbon you shouldn't leave in during your cycle. You can put that in after. The foam is just filtering out pieces of detritus. I tend to prefer filter floss instead of those sponge/foam filters. But if you use the sponge you need to remove it and clean it every once in a while. Or you can use a filter media that you can just throw out and replace.

So realistically I could just run the HOB as water movement if I have enough live rock? I've read people will just fill their filter with rubble rock for additional bio filter. I might start using some throwaway filter material just to keep the water nice and shiny. Thanks for the tips.

Hob are ok to use, but you might want to look into a sump if you decide to do corals. Also you get more water volumn and versatility to add thing. Also more convenient to clean and maintain. Plus when you add chemicals to tank creates a bigger swing then to add in sump. Just my 2 cent.
