Filter set up for JBJ 24 gal cube

I have an LED jbj 24 gal. What is the best arrangement for the 3 black sponges and charcoal in the back? I have 2 sponges in the left compartment, 1 in the middle and the charcoal in the far right with the pump.
It seems like a lot of sponge. I am not using the bioballs. Thanks.

Another question - Is the pump routinely upgraded or kept as is? If it is upgraded, what size/brand have people had success with?
