filter socks/chaeto saving pods etc

Curious if anyone has any techniques on saving pods etc when changing filter socks and trimming chaeto. I actually use a mesh filter sock inside a felt one, mesh filters out food, stray chaeto, but also pods, worms etc. Felt traps detritus nicely. I try to pick them out so they're not washed down the drain when cleaning them, but I always feel bad knowing I'm killing these guys when i do cleanings. Same thing with trimming chaeto, any tricks in getting the beneficial critters out before getting rid of trimmings? I usually will lie the trimmed chaeto on top of eggcrate over my sump hoping they'll jump to safety before it all dries out, but I think I'm being optimistic! Any thoughts?
