Filter Socks

Where do you guys install and run filter socks?.... If you can post pics it
would be great, I'd like to know more about'm, their uses, installation, etc..."thanks."

I bought 100% polyester felt and got my grandma to stitch them like a regular filter sock. Much cheaper and works like a charm. :) Just put them on your overflow line, velcro works good to hold them.

I have mine on the output of my drain. If you look at the picture you can see the draw string hooked to a hook. I change it out every two or three day. Does a great job filtering. You just have to make sure your pods are not getting thrown away. I check mine and try to put the one I see back in the tank.

"filter socks" are a form of mechanical filtration. Mechanical filtration is a good thing. Filter socks aren't because socks will clog up. Never tie a filter sock on the end of a drain. Use a micron filter pad in a basket, so no clogging up can occur.

I used two pieces of acrylic rod and a sock I made from felt like msuzuki126 did. I got the idea from RandyStacyE's website.

I don’t run mine 24/7 but I made two socks which I change out every two days when I use them.

This is with the bubble extractor.

the point of a filter sock is to filter all your water. If you change your filter sock every two or three days you should never run into problems with clogging at all. Some people may want you to leave a way for the water to excape if it clogs up. Well, if your that person who tends to forget or just too lazy to consistently stay on top of the filter sock then yea that may be the way you need to go. Also as long the sock is below the rim of the sump, IF you do get lazy, water will just exit through the top of the sock. Their is no need to run the sock all the time. I ran mine mostly during the cycle period to catch all the crap.

I stopped running mine because it would clog up every 2 days - not sure if I was cleaning them properly...Can anyone recommend a good way to clean the socks?

Hmm, so basically a micron filter pad (whether it be 50,100 or 200) placed on top of a wet/dry filter will accomplish the same thing?
As in filter socks are for hobbiest that do not run a wet/dry, canister or
power type filters and therefore have to make/buy something to be able to run micron type filter pads...?

I bought the Berlin acrylic mount...

that is sweet.us where did you get it?

I clean my filter socks by dumping them in the washing machine by themselves,(no soap/detergent), gentle cycle and let them swish. Then hang to dry. A little bleach is ok. Just rinse well.

i dont have a picture but my return pump is 1,200 gph. i have two socks which are held in my rubbermaid sump above the water levil by two 3" tall by 4" dia pieces of pvc screwed onto the side with plastic screws.

100 micron filter socks
get washed every 2-3 days, i have extras

john at my lfs builds acrylic sumps and also builds sock holders that sit in the corner of a glass aquarium. i have a single sock holder on my 60gal and a dual on my 125gal.

as you can see mine need to be cleaned.

 I admire your respect for life!

It's true though, filter socks do filter out plankton. I only run mine when I'm blowing off the scum on live rocks and during water chages.

I bought a wet dry and converted it into a sump only box, but whats great about this type of sump is that it has a square cover that my hose is connected to and three inches below that is the eggcrete so I cut a circle out of the eggcrete to hold the filter sock in place and if it clogs up then it just over flows untill I can get to it, also with the cover on the sump it is vertually silent. I have to run my sock 24/7 because of the mandarin, the gobies, the tangs and my tunzes kicking up all kinds of debris. (sorry this is the closest pic I have of the sump).
