Filter socks

Where is the best place to buy filter socks? online? locally?

Do HD or Lowe's carry filter socks?

What micron filter sock is best?

Do they all attach the same way?

Thanks!

Chris, I don't mean to derail your thread/question, but hopefully you don't mind me asking something about filter socks.

Is it advisable to leave filter socks on 24/7? Will they restrict possible "good things" to re-enter through the sump? My tank (which is still in the curing process) has been crystal clear since I put on a filter sock last Thursday. I'd like to keep it on if someone can assure me that nothing "good" is being lost by using it.

Thank you.

Wendy,

Don't mind at all. I'm still learning myself.

I do have one more big question though:

How do you hang/attach this sock in the sump(livestock water tank) to the end of the drain so that it stays in place?

Chris, my spa-flex tubing from the overflow goes right into the filter sock, which sits in the sump, next to the skimmer. Did that make any sense to you?

I was under the impression the filter socks were made of flexible material, so they would have to be attached somehow to something to keep them from floating away.

I have seen an acrylic holder for the filter sock rings, but it won't work on a livestock tank the rim is too big.

What holds the sock up?

I'm going to take a picture of mine to give you a better idea. ;)

I have two drain lines floing thru a 32 gal Brute in my sump. I just tie off my filter socks around the two pvc nipples.

I used to run them 24/7, now I will run them on a day or two and off a day or two. I alway run it when I clean the tank.

Here are some pictures of how mine looks, how it's attached, and where it sits.

Thanks David and Wendy, I think I've got it now. My socks are a little different(solid ring at the top) but I think I can manage to rig a way to hold them up.

JW,
Great pics. I do have a ? as I need to get some filter socks myself. How close to the water level in the sump is your drain? & is it above or below water level?
Thank you,
Chris

Mine is about 2-3" below water level for noise reduction. Mine is absolutely quiet, even without the filter sock. :)
