Okay so I have a 10g FOWLR with a HOB AC 20 and two AC 30's. I have about 10-15 lb LR as well. Only bad thing is that I have to use tap water because I'm not buying an RO/DI unit for a 10gal tank. The reason I started this tank was because I love keep SW tanks but I don't have the cash by any means to keep anything but a small clownfish tank.
SO.
I have questions about red slime. I'm still within my first 6 months with this specific tank, although I'm using LR that I've transfered between 2 other tanks since march. In my AC 20 I usually run 3 sponges or 2 sponges and carbon. My water is usually pretty clear and I've learned that in this tank I can only really feed a very tiny amount every 2 days to the fish or else I get huge red slime outbreaks. I'm also using Reef Crystals and AmQuel+ plus which removes "Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia, Chlorinie, and Chloramines" to condition the tap water. Since I've started feeding very small amounts to my two black osc. clowns, the red slime had diminished considerably. However, it continues to come back. I also have hair algae which is becoming less and less of a nuisance and iis going away. My questions are:
1) Is this red slime just a part of the 'new' tank? Or is it because of the tap water?
2) Which is better in my AC 20 filter: the sponges and carbon or should I set up a small fuge in there? Or should I buy another small filter like that to make a fuge in? What Would I need to put inside the fuge aside from the macro in order for it to be a working fuge?
Is this something that will go away with time or do I need more filtration? (Fuge etc) Or am I gonna have to start buying the $1/gallon RO water?
Thanks I know it's a lot but please help!
