Filtration for keeping reef fish only

What is the minimum (and I mean minimum) water filtration setup I can use to keep reef fish? I would not like to buy a full blown ro/di setup. Will I be able to get away with tap water if I have no dsb?

first all the rodi is just for making new saltwater and top off it is not for the filtration of the tank and is highly recomended if you plan on keeping fish PERIOD..... weather it be fresh or salt water fish. Now as far as tank filtration goes for just a fish only saltwater tank you could just run big power/canister filter to keep it simple, however in all honesty id recomend a sump with bioballs or liverock rubble, and no bio balls arnt bad as long as u keep them from getting too dirty they are fine and do ther job well it when you let them get full of garbage is when you will have a problem. Skimmer allthough recomended not really a nessesity when it comes to a fish only tank, but if you do get one make sure you get a good one as a cheap one is almost like not having one at all. You dont need a dsb for a fish only, for that matter you dont need a dsb for a reef tank. You are gonna wanna get a few powerheads for flow in the tank.

Hey turbonut thanks for your responce but you have mis-understood my question. I already have all that stuff in my sps and lps system + a 200gpd rodi unit. I just want to use tab water for a FO setup. I have read about setups where people use tap water with success. I would like to at least run some type of tap water filtration for the FO setup.

By the way RO/DI unit does FILTER your tap water. ;)

yes rodi does filter ur tap water, you said or at least the way i understood it was meant for tank filtration, and yes you can use tapwater as long as you use some kind of conditioner, but my question to you is if you already have an rodi unit why wouldnt you use it for your fish only tank?
