filtration for mantis

anyone run a canister on a mantis tank?
i plan on keeping it in a 20g acrylic tank which already has bulkheads for drain and return and would be nice for canister.

do all you keep skimmers or some not at all- just do water changes?

Most probably don't keep their stomatopod in such a large tank (unless it's a large species like a peacock, etc). I Keep mine in a 5.5g w/o a skimmer. It has a modified ac300 acting as a fuge and LR filter. Water changes are the only other filtration I do.

That setup sounds good for a peacock. If you have a spare skimmer laying around I'd throw one on. But if you don't, I wouldn't spend the moolah.

I have a large male OS (peacock) and i keep him in a 20 gallon tank I built myself with acrylic. I have a little HOB type filter w/ some macro algae inside, carbon, and a powerhead. To be honest with you it is the most challanging tank to keep in check. Mantis eats alot and therefore wastes alot, he is constantly killing snails and crabs (good for him, bad for water paramaters) I can keep it in check with water changes, but I have had hair algae and cyano problems in the past. If I had an extra skimmer I'd run it... I am still tossing around a DIY skimmer idea for that tank as well.

i have a thick brace on my tank so i dont think i can get one of those hang ons. but i think i can devise a way to just have the pump sit near the surface and fall back down.

what seems to be up with the water parameters? high ammonia?

I havent had any ammonia problems, but I also am using NSW which greatly helps. The problem is such a constantly changing environment. He is constantly killing and eating and sometimes he dosent kill as much so there is less decomposition therefore less nutrients, they he'll go on a frenzy and kill alot of stuff and there is higher nutrients...

It isnt out of hand by any means, just requires a bit more attention. I think a skimmer would help the situation to remove some excess nutrients, if I get around to trying I will report.

what about plumbing it into your main system? thats what i plan to do when i get one...i guess location and space is the biggest factor there...
