Filtration Options...

I was wanting to get some of your opinions on filtration options for my 75gal. I've decided not to go reef with this tank, and stay FOWLR. So far I have been running my Emperor 400 & 280 with no problems, but am wanting to get away from them and go with something a bit more hidden. There are so many options out there now that I am completely confused about what to do. My tank is not drilled, so if I went with anything I would have to use an overflow box. I also dont have the money to invest in a nice acrylic refugium or sump. I do have a few spare 10gal aquariums to make one with, but have no clue how. Should I spend the money and get a good canister filter or try to make a fuge out of a spare tank? Also, would a 10gal be big enough for a fuge? What is your favorite canister filters? Thanks for any info I can get, still trying to learn all I can!

Use an overflow down to a 10 gallon tank underneath. Make a small area for water to drain into the sump, put in a protein skimmer the use an area for a small fuge and the put in a couple baffles and lastly a return pump. Very accomplishable for a 10 gallon tank. You dont need anything fancy. And then use a mag pump for a return.

Where would I go to get the glass for the baffles? I heard lowes cuts glass, but will they do it for something like that?

I would go with a fuge/sump. You can buy acrylic from lowes.

That being said, I have a fluval 405 that I am not using if interested. It is a pretty strong cannister filter. I would think it would work well for a FOWLR.

How much would you want for the Fluval 405? Also, what would you use to glue the acrylic together if I got it from Lowes?

those glass cutters they sell next to the glass replacement window panes at HD work very well with almost no effort, the glass cutter and glass are right next to the acrylic sheets.. just be carefull with the edges their sharp obviously.
